'Tausug Woman Culture Revived In Binibing Jolo 2010' by Nash Usman Abduhadi

On March 7, 2010 at about 1:00 in the afternoon, the Tausug culture was once again revived by the Rainbow 7.15 Frequency by staging the most awaited, most prestigious and not to mention most controversial beauty pageant in town of Jolo the Budjang Tiangge (Binibing Jolo) 2010 held at Notre Dame Gymnasium.

This year’s theme was: CULTURAL REVIVAL: A TAUSUG WOMAN WAY OF LIFE. Yes, indeed tausug culture was given enough emphasis by the nine (9) lovely and competitive candidates from different areas in Jolo who did not only show to the big crowd their beauty, talent and wit but more importantly showcase the Tausug attires such as: sablay, avant garde (with a mixture of Tausug fashion), batawi, Tausug bridal gown and denim wear.

The candidates ranged from 8 barangays of Jolo and some teen clan groups namely: Rapapeopz Clan, Chopa Chop Clan, Kasulutan, San raymundo, Asturias, Lambayong, Bus-Bus and Walled City. Before the conduct of the pageant proper, the candidates went through a series of activities such as: tree planting with the help of different line agencies namely: Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of Agriculture (DAR). They were also exposed to radio stations to promote the said show and they were paraded around town for a motorcade.

The said pageant was made possible through the help of certain sponsors such as: Skin White, Maxi Peel, Sunsilk, Silka and Ponds. Major sponsors ranged from local government officials and the like. Series of minor and major awards were given to the candidates, below is the list:

Miss Photogenic- Fatima Shalie Nada S. Hashim (Chopa Chop Clan)
Miss Friendship- Sharifa Rojia Anding Adjuh (Barangay Kasulutan)
Miss Skin white- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
Miss Maxi peel- Keeshia Keith Sajili (Barangay Asturias)
Miss Sunsilk- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
Miss Silka- Sharifa Rojia Anding Adjuh (Barangay Kasulutan)
Miss Ponds- Sharifa Rojia Anding Adjuh (Barangay Kasulutan)

The candidates also competed for the major exposures namely production number, denim wear, bridal gown, avant garde and batawi. Below is the list of the candidates who carried their poise, bearing and beauty at their best:

Best in Tausug Avant Garde- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
Best in Production Number- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
Best in Denim Wear- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
Best in Tausug Bridal Gown- Keeshia Keith Sajili (Barangay Asturias)
Best in Batawi- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)

And finally after the series of exposures, only five lucky candidates who made it through the pageant. Indeed all the candidates were all winners in their own rights.The major awards went to the following:

Miss Tourism- Sharifa Rojia Anding Adjuh (Barangay Kasulutan)
Miss Rainbow- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
4th Runner up- Nadia H. Ismael( Barangay Asturias)
3rd Runner up-Lovelle Melody S. Lauzon (Rapapeopz Clan)
2nd Runner up-Fatima Shalie-Nada Hashim (Chopa Chop Clan)
1st runner up-Keeshia-Keith P. Sajili (Barangay Asturias)
Budjang Tiangge 2010- Sharifa Rojia Anding Adjuh (Barangay Kasulutan)

Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s pageant. Truly, they are all women of substance, women of Sulu.
